State Fair's fried bites come with a little guilty pleasure

fried-food1Does it make sense to batter and fry a perfectly delicious loaded baked potato? If you’re at the State Fair, the “Fried Food Capital of Texas,” would you have it any other way?

State Fair of Texas is Sept. 26-Oct. 19 at Fair Park in Dallas.

Daytripper Chet Garner gets corny at State Fair

The Chicken-fried Loaded Baked Potato is one of the offerings at this year’s State Fair, which kicks off on Friday, Sept. 26.

In case you have a hankering to fill your fried food needs, here’s what else you’ll find.

Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil

shrimpboilHow about a Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil for people on the go? Yes, they will have that at the fair, and it receives the 2014 Big Texas Choice Award honors for Best Taste. Baby gulf shrimp, potatoes, onion, lemon and seasoning are formed around a cocktail shrimp, coated and fried. Grab the shrimp by the tail to dip it in its accompanying remoulade sauce. Yum.

Deep-fried “Breakfast for Dinner”

Is it breakfast or dinner? One thing is for sure … it’s fried! The Deep-fried “Breakfast for Dinner” is a handful, including eight traditional American breakfast items rolled into one tortilla and fried. We’re talking eggs, sausage, bacon, potatoes, ham, onion, cheddar cheese AND cinnamon roll bits. How do you top that? With creamy country gravy, salsa and a pico-queso dip, of course.

Deep Fried Texas Bluebonnet

Nothing says Texas like a deep-fried icon. No state flowers are harmed in the making of the Deep Fried Texas Bluebonnet, so eat up without guilt … mostly. To achieve this treat, a blueberry muffin, scone-style batter is stuffed with cream cheese, blueberries and white chocolate morsels, and fried. It is then topped with whipped cream, white chocolate, powdered sugar. Blueberries and a blueberry glaze.

breakfastFried Sweet Texas

Oh wait. They’re not just frying the bluebonnet. Fried Sweet Texas is on the menu! Pie dough, filled with crunchy pecan pie, pear cobbler and buttermilk pie, is fried and topped with Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream.

Twisted Texas Tacos

Still not enough Texas for ya? How about taking the four major Texas food groups – Chicken fried, barbecue, Tex-Mex and Chili – and bringing them all together for some Twisted Texas Tacos. That’s chicken-fried beef brisket served in a tortilla and layered with cheese, fried okra, sweet slaw and served with a side of creamy country gravy and spicy chili. That’s a lot of Texas in that taco!

Fried Sriracha Balls

If you can take the heat, Fried Sriracha Balls might hit the spot. A combination of shredded chicken, corn, chilies, tomatoes and Sriracha hot sauce are formed into balls, coated with tortilla chips and … you guessed it … fried.

When you’re ready to wash it down, you wont have to stray too far from the treats with the funnel cake-flavored Original State Fair Brew. Yes, brew. This English-style summer ale can be delivered with a sugar-rimmed coating on the cup. Pretty creative.
