Texas is a land of outsized artistic talent. And every couple of years, the Texas Legislature recognizes the best of the Lone Star creatives by naming a lineup of official Texas State Artists.

The Texas Commission on the Arts is seeking nominations for the official Texas State Artists for 2019 and 2020. Through October 15, Texans can nominate a living Texas artist for the Legislature’s highest honor for artists.

The positions, which include state poet laureate, state musician, state two-dimensional artist and state three-dimensional artist, recognize honorees for their years of excellence and dedicated commitment to the arts in Texas.

Past Texas State Artists have included Marcia Ball (2018 state musician), Carmen Tafolla (2015 state poet), and Joe Ely (2016 state musician). You can find lists of past honorees and more information about the program here.

“Texas State Artists represent the best of Texas’ rich and diverse artistic community,” the Texas Commission on the Arts says. “These individuals inspire others through their unique creative expression. This designation is our state’s highest recognition for excellence in the arts.”
