Salute to Sausage

In what organizers call a "10-day salute to sausage," New Braunfels' Wurstfest (Nov. 7-16 this year) brings thousands of revelers annually to its festival grounds on the Comal River banks.

Started in 1961 to celebrate the region's German heritage, Wurstfest now features more than 60 entertainment groups and hundreds of food and beverage vendors. In between polkas and waltzes, festival-goers (many sporting lederhosen and traditional dirndls) can recharge on such German specialties as strudel, potato pancakes, and, of course, dozens of types of sausage.

In response to the growing crowds, the Stelzenplatz is expanding to offer more elbow room along with more food, craft beer and shopping options. There's a little extra room for the Masskrugstemmen, a contest to see who can hold a one-liter stein of beer in one outstretched arm the longest.
