113th Anniversary of Spindletop Oil Discovery

3042 300CMYKpg59

These days, Texas is practically synonymous with the oil business. But the industry was very new in 1901, when drillers tapped the Spindletop oilfield near Beaumont and set off the petroleum age.

The Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum at Lamar University in Beaumont celebrates those early days January 11, 2014 with its Drillers Reunion, the commemoration of the 113th anniversary of the discovery of Spindletop oil. The re-created Lucas Gusher will spout water, and reenactors will recall boomtown life with activities such as a temperance tearoom, land surveying, period games, and a “driller’s lunch” of brisket, beans, and cornbread.
