On the Rio Grande

IF YOU’VE SEEN THE NEWS REPORTS AND have shied away from visiting Laredo in recent months, you’re not alone. But we have some good news to share about the border region, thanks in part to a $14-million renovation of the historic La Posada Hotel, which overlooks the Rio Grande just a block from International Bridge #1. The lobby, courtyard areas, and restaurant have been updated to project a more-modern feel, and the rooms boast new beds, lighting, and color schemes, along with flat-screen televisions and free wi-fi access.

If you come to Laredo with trinkets on your mind, rest assured that shopping opportunities still abound along Laredo’s San Bernardo Street and throughout downtown. (There’s even a small gift shop at La Posada that is stocked with Mexican textiles, pottery, and curios.) And if you decide to visit Laredo’s sister city, Nuevo Laredo, you’ll be rewarded with low prices, few crowds, and the gratitude of hardworking shopkeepers who want their city back.  Call 800/444-2099; www.laposadahotel.com.
