Lighter Than Air

There’s something magical about a hot air balloon in flight—for fliers and watchers alike. The colorful crafts sometimes float by as we peer skyward, and a sighting can elevate and transform the day. However, if you don’t want to wait for a chance encounter, you can attend one of Texas’ many balloon events.

The Lake Travis Hot Air Balloon Flyover provides a modestly scaled assemblage of 15 to 18 of these airborne marvels each August at Mansfield Dam Park, west of Austin. The relatively intimate size of the event—some gatherings and competitions attract anywhere from 50 to 750 balloons—is part of the draw.

For a statewide sampling of balloon events, see “Scenics Rising.”
