Western Hill Country picks
My sister and I explored the western Hill Country. We highly recommend the wienerschnitzel and chocolate hazelnut crème brûlée at the Welfare Café in Welfare, the down-home lunch and yeast rolls at Neal’s Lodges’ dining room in Concan, the rustic Foxfire Log Cabins at Vanderpool, and The Comfort Common in aptly named Comfort.
At Camp Verde General Store in Camp Verde, we especially liked the gorgeous patio and the whimsical metal sculpture of a camel out front.

While my wife and I were visiting family in Leander, a local fireman told me that the O’Leander Café had a pecan burger that was “worth dying for.” So I went over, met owners Loretta and David Warner, and ordered the O’Leander Pecan Burger, which is cooked with a special pecan-and-onion mix. If you are willing to die for a hamburger, that’s one burger “worth dying for!” Along with the burger, I ordered sweet-potato fries and a Pepsi, and was really tempted to try one of their mouth-watering desserts, but I had no room left. We went back to Leander in mid-November and just had to take a little diversion over to the O’Leander Café.

In Flatonia, Robert’s Steakhouse, formerly Stockman’s, has a new owner. Now, Robert Palomera is wooing folks, like me, to drool over the divine $12.99 steak dinner! You get those crispy, wonderful fried onions, a crisp salad, and a great choice of potatoes. Please do check this one out—you won’t be disappointed.
Jim’s Bar-B-Que and Catfish
Driving into East Texas at Waskom we saw a billboard sign for Jim’s Bar-B-Que and Catfish. I had the (very tender) smoky-flavored pork ribs that practically fell off the bone. They truly have a real pit barbecue out back! My husband had the Cajun-fried catfish dinner, the tastiest catfish he’d ever had. Both dinners were served with choice of coleslaw, potato salad, corn on the cob, or beans, with huge glasses of iced tea! The menu also boasts a country breakfast, sandwich plates, chicken, hot links, beef and pork dinners, burgers, desserts and more.

On a recent trip to the coast, we stopped at an out-of-the-way café in Campbellton. Stetson is a vintage ’50’s-era café run by Jean and “Papa Bear” Roane. Jean said they were famous for their hamburgers and chicken-fried steak, so we took them up on it. The burger was a great, old-fashioned grilled cheeseburger, and the chicken-fried steak was large, tender, flavorful, and all meat under the golden batter. Cold iced tea was served in mason jars and Cokes from the bottle. Jean gives “free advice” and tells colorful stories while “Papa Bear” does the cooking. This café will be on our permanent South Texas-trip agenda!

You will find the largest burger in Texas in the smallest place in Amarillo: Arnold Burgers. In an 18-by-30-foot building, the largest hamburger—24 inches with all the fixings-—is served almost daily. Other burgers come in all shapes and sizes, and the smallest item there is called the “hamburger cookie.” Yum!
